Let's talk trash

Here's a subject I haven't seen very often on these forums. What are the best waste management practices you've seen at campgrounds?

I've seen three:
  1. Small trash cans on each loop where you take your trash
  2. One or more large dumpsters at the park entrance
  3. Just leave your trash at the front of your site between daybreak and 1:00 pm. (my all-time favorite method)
My favorite is number three because it's so easy and the trash just magically disappears.

I'm also curious, do you folks buy trash bags or do you recycle the plastic shopping bags you get from the grocery store?
  • Most of the places we camp (USFS campgrounds) have a strict "Pack It In, Pack It Out" policy. You MUST take your trash home with you. Then, just to make it more interesting, many of the trash containers in towns near the campgrounds have signs proclaiming that "Private Dumpster, Not For Public Use!" They do not want campers filling their dumpster!
Some USFS campgrounds (usually those close to towns) have bear-proof dumpsters.
Those that are several miles from a town often do not.
There is usually a bulletin board at the entrance, with the rules plainly posted. Read it.
  • A daily on-site trash pickup is a nice feature, but I don't mind walking to a dumpster that's emptied regularly either. In bear country of course, the trash containers can be a bit more challenging to access, sometimes just needing two hands to open a hatch, while others require unlatching a gated entry first. Either way, I appreciate the need for the precautions. We use recycled grocery bags as much as possible.
  • Dumpsters at the entrance are my least favorite simply because of being less convenient. But in bear country it is much more practical, unless the park picks up trash at each site daily.

We use trash bags as we do have a trash can area in a lower kitchen cabinet.
  • There's a large RV place we stay at near Surprise, AZ that has a strange trash policy. They do curbside trash pick-up every Tuesday morning. That's nice as far as it goes.

The problem is they don't have any place for you to put trash the rest of the week - no trash cans, no dumpsters, no nothing. If you cook porkchops, with bones, Tuesday night for dinner, the bones have to sit in your trash for a week. I asked them why they didn't have any place to put trash and they said it had caused them too much trouble in the past and that's all they'd say. Sometimes at night I go with a walk with the trash up to gym or pickle ball court.

Because of no large trash containers in the MH, we mostly reuse grocery bags doubled up.

  • Most places I camp are in bear country. So I would be horrified to see anything there but #2, in the form of large bear-proof dumpsters. At the most, scattered trash cans with the bear-proof openers.
  • I'm always just grateful when there is a place to unload the trash. In my sailing days, we had a saying. "May you always sail faster than your garbage!" To me trash capacity is the primary limiting factor on the range I can travel.
