Montana has declared GVW on the registration. My old Dodge 3500 was registered for 14,000 lbs GVW (NOT GVWR, the RATING has nothing to do with it).
I will register my Dodge 1500 for 8,000 lbs, since the GVWR is 6600 it would not make sense to register it for 6000 lbs.
Many years ago, a GVW placard was required in the side of the truck: "GVW 6000" or whatever. Now we don't have to do that.
Years ago in Missouri we too had to have the weight and the town name on the side of the truck. "Farm" or "local" use was a different cost for tags. The other rating was ( is ) "BL" ....beyond local.
I'm not sure how closely any of that stuff was ever watched. Potentially probably more of it was likely to be, for instance ag operations being scrutinized. However, my experience hauling hay has been that since most of this work is done on local or state roads, and since most of the patrolling there is county sheriff deputies, and since most of those guys are good 'ol farm boys all grown up now, they pretty much just wave howdy to us, and let us get on with the work of the day.
Those guys generally have better things to do than worry over tag weight and distance violations.
State highway patrol can be another game though. Those guys are more likely to be "by the book". Which is one of the reasons we keep all of our stuff tip-top perfect.....brakes, lights, load rigging, tags, everything. All "I's" dotted and "T's" crossed.
