The thing that all are pointing out, be it the fee's are based on tare or total wt you will run down the road. MAKE SURE the max total in some way shape or form is based on the total you will be. Otherwise, you could find your self in a world of hurt if the LEO that has you pulled over says you are "overweight". Which as I have seen happen, can happen even if under a manufacture limit! Marty is correct. In IL the citation is overweight on registration (625 ILCS 5/3-401). Use to we could force registration when writing such a violation. What that means is the vehicle sits until the driver properly paid the registration fees for the total weight. This was in addition to the fine. Additionally, when the owner was sent his annual registration notice it was for the higher registration fee. It wasn't cheap not to mention the amount of hassle of sitting on the side of the road waiting for the Sec of State people to come out to do the force registration which could be hours.
