IO would think that most state have a commercial (weight rated) and non-commercial (under a certain weight) classification for tags.
A 1/2T pick-up or van is probably classed the same as cars/SUVs. A 3/4T maybe?
A 1-Ton, probably not, but there are a bunch of states (54 according to some politicians), and I don't know about all of them.
What is the real question here?
Just winter curiosity as to which states do it which way. Never thought much about it until I saw people posting they registered for a certain weight and we don't here.
As you may have noticed, every state has their own "ideas" on vehicle registration and the "fees" involved.
Many states the fees are tied to the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and the higher the weight the higher the fees.
The public officials which enacted these fees would like to make you think that the bigger and heavier loads do more "damage" to the roads so hence the reason for these fees is to recoup money for supposed road repairs. In reality the money just simply goes into the big black hole...
Many states actually have their registration fees posted out on the 'net like your neighbor PA does.
