License plates by weight

What I meant was that having my truck reg in IN or most any other state, I can still haul my privately owned fifth wheel nearly anywhere in the US without fear of being bothered by the weight police and be legal doing so. Otherwise a person would have to get a permit for every state they travel through, hence one state so called honoring another states registration.

As long as your truck is registered in Ohio where its not required to have a weight rating on your plate what makes the diff what other states require...its all about what state your truck is registered in as to what you are required to have. ILCS = Illinois Compiled Statutes.
Easy to remember the section. I don't have to look it up. I wrote it enough times during my career. Common cite. You remember the commonly written section numbers because you have to write them everytime you write the citation. People buy the cheaper registration for lighter weight limits thinking they're going to get by. You should hear the whining when they get caught.

Wish I had off the top of my head the RCW for here that quotes the actual law.....I am assuming ILCS is equal to RCW here in washington. ie Rules Codes of Washington. This is also where this state is real adamant about following the FBL's, and where it is illegal to be over 500 lbs per inch width of tire to a max 20K per single, and 34K per tandem. I should look up those RCW's to show folks......

Hence also where I think it was this thread, maybe another, where I showed by math, that most of us with single tired trucks and trailer will have to be over 20K or so on the truck, 10K per axel, another 17-20K on the rv trailer to be truly overweight as the rules are enforced here. ASSUMING, one has the correct total paid for GVW. There is NO R in the GVW from a reg tag/license standpoint per say!

Marty is correct. In IL the citation is overweight on registration (625 ILCS 5/3-401). Use to we could force registration when writing such a violation. What that means is the vehicle sits until the driver properly paid the registration fees for the total weight. This was in addition to the fine. Additionally, when the owner was sent his annual registration notice it was for the higher registration fee. It wasn't cheap not to mention the amount of hassle of sitting on the side of the road waiting for the Sec of State people to come out to do the force registration which could be hours.

The thing that all are pointing out, be it the fee's are based on tare or total wt you will run down the road. MAKE SURE the max total in some way shape or form is based on the total you will be. Otherwise, you could find your self in a world of hurt if the LEO that has you pulled over says you are "overweight". Which as I have seen happen, can happen even if under a manufacture limit! IF your paid for tag is not greater than what you weigh.

I have commercial plates as I don't consider a 3500 Diesel Dually as a Passenger car. But yes NY max it can be reg for is the GVWR or something less, but Florida you can reg for what ever.

Not true, it's based on the GVW, a/k/a curb weight. Look on your registration. Unless you have it plated as commercial, in which case it's different.
