Leaving your vehicle unlocked is kinda SOP when visiting Maui.
Rental car companies will tell you to leave nothing of value in the car EVER and the windows down an doors unlocked if no rain is expected, otherwise windows up and doors unlocked.
Like OP theorises it is cheaper to simply have a theif rummage thru your vehicle than break a widow and rummage thru it.
