Like OP theorises it is cheaper to simply have a theif rummage thru your vehicle than break a widow and rummage thru it.
True in certain areas of Oahu, too. Typically, if you don't leave valuables in sight, a thief won't open a door or break a window. Leave your cell phone, a merchandise bag, or some other valuable in sight and it's like bait.
