This year there's a brash newcomer to the traditional list of meteor showers. Ever since 2012, solar-system dynamicists have been keeping close tabs on periodic comet 209P/LINEAR, which came its closest to the Sun in 2009 and will do so again this May 6th. They now expect Earth to be clipped by a dense stream of particles shed by this comet. Their predictions span a wide range — from 100 to an amazing 1,000 per hour.

  • Looking outside at 08:00 this morning, I'm afraid all we'll be able to see tonight is "800 broken, 1500 overcast, rain and fog". Any info on the timing for this location (approx 119W, 48N)?
  • The info I've seen is that the peak is expected to be after midnight tonight, so actually Saturday in the wee small AM hours, like 1 AM to 5 AM. Rate predictions are very uncertain, but vary from 100/hr to _maybe_ 1000/hr. 1000 would be a true 'meteor storm'.

Our astronomy club (www.astroasheville.org) has a stargaze scheduled for tonight on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Most predictions are for a clear to partly cloudy night. As soon as the current t-storm gets past, I'm going to load the telescope and strap my plastic recliner to the Tiger's ladder. Heading out about 6 or 7. See y'all in the dark! ;)

    Jim, "Mo' coffee!"
  • I'll be over the Atlantic during hours of darkness, FL350 or so, above most weather. I hope I have a window seat, but odds on that for coach in this aircraft are 2/9.

For meteor showers I usually go out to one of the COE parks where I have a view over the reservoir, stretch out on a camp cot and just watch the sky.

This isn't too bad for viewing midweek, but on the weekend everybody strings out lights to make the campground as bright as Times Square. I don't understand the thing about going camping and trying to make nature look like the city.
  • Thanks, I have a buddy who's an astronomy whiz and I'm going to drop this info on him and see if he's aware of it.
  • Thanks for the tip! We will be camping out in Great Basin National Park, and should have a nice, clear, dark sky for this event.
