Magnetic tow lights

How many of you use these on your toad towing 4 down? I just bought a new car and there isn't much room to wire the extra bulb into the rear tail lens. I don't want to do the diode wire as it splices into the factory wires and will void the warranty.

So I'm considering these. It seems it would be easier than wiring a new car every two or three years. Do you just throw the wire over the roof of the toad? How do you keep the wire from moving all around?
  • I ran and zip tied trailer light wire through the undercarriage of my Jeep with 4 way trailer plugs on each end. Shortened the wire on the magnetic lights and attached a jumper to the tow bar.

I just hook up, mount the mag-lights on the rear bumper, plug in and go.
  • When I was getting ready to wire the lights for our then new 2011 RAV4, our dealer was very helpful by checking with Toyota that there would be no warranty issues (The federal Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act applies), and then supplying me with wiring diagram copies to help locate the correct wires in the drivers side kick panel. That location gave me plenty of room for the diode packs, and avoided the need to route wires all the way to the back. They also asked for pictures of my wiring, base plate, and lube pump installations, so they could show them to other RV owners that were considering buying a Toyota they could also use as a toad.
  • I just flip it over the roof and keep it from dragging on the ground between the MH and TOAD by wrapping around the wipers once or twice. Being close to the back of the MH, it's isolated from the wind and the cord hardly moves at all.

I do this all the time using these stick-on cable tie down units. You can run a regular tie wrap through them to secure your wiring. You might be able to adapt this to out-of-sight locations on the towed vehicle and secure these cables. Then adapt a 4-way plug on the two vehicle end and a 4-way socket on the other end to plug your magnetic lights into it. I would not be a big fan of just laying the rear lights cables on top of the towed vehicle...

What I would not want to happen would be the wiring to start flopping around in the wind and doing paint damage to my towed vehicle...

I have seen a more professional wiring done where a separate flip lid cable connector was installed on the front of the towed vehicle out of sight and a separate cable plugged into the tow vehicle. I'm sure that would be your DIODE wiring tied into the running and brake lights on the towed vehicle that you don't want to do...
