Maintenance and repair comparison

We are considering purchasing a Class C motor home after 15 years of owning a 5ver

We have been reading a lot of posts that Class C's are money pits. My question is, what more maintenance am I going to have on a motor home that I didn't have on a fifth wheel and 3500 HD truck?

The only thing I can come up with is the generator. We had tire replacement, which was extremely frequent with our fifth wheel (main reason to quit hauling one), oil and tires on truck.

All other components on a motor home are the same components on a fifth wheel. So I can't see the cost to own one being any greater.

Thoughts from experienced owners would be appreciated.
  • I would think there is one price factor to take into consideration.

With a truck and trailer you have the ability to separate transportation from housing.

With a CLASS-C MH you have to take transportation and house with you everywhere. However, if you attach a toad, THEN you have increased your maintenance because now you have 2 engines to take care of, 2 sets of oil changes, etc, etc, etc... A second driveable vehicle to use with the CLASS-C is where the extra cost and maintenance will factor in.
  • Tires on a fiver? Your either buying really cheap tires or you have axle problems! My fiver is going on 12 years old and only on its second set of shoes.
  • I am pretty sure you have already made your mind up to switch, cost of this hobby is nothing that could be put into dollars and cents. One guy buys a diesel drives it for 100000 and doesn't put a dime into it. Another guy buys one and the first thing that goes in the first 50 miles is the blower. So money is nothing to look at. What I am curious about is what do you do when you drive a class C and want to go see the sights? Parking one of those Cs is not an easy task. I know I owned one for years and years. I hated the idea of going and see anything because it was such a pain to park. Some folks don't mind that.. That's great I did, that's why I switched. Oh I could have pulled a toad I guess but that was more trouble than I wanted to go through as well. So it's not the cost it's what part of the hobby you enjoy and what part do you consider a pain in the butt..
  • Thanks, we already know the costs for a fifth wheel and a truck, and realize that not all rigs are the same. We also realize that sometimes you get a lemon. We just wanted to enter this purchase with our eyes wide open.

RVing is not a cheap endeavor, but it is a very rewarding adventure that u am not willing to give up.
  • ALL RVs are money pits. It costs $130-150 night to own and operate a Class C MH based on 90 nights/year of camping.

We camp 90 nights per year, so that works out to roughly $1,000 month.

COST OF MH , maintenance, insurance, gas , camping fees, license, storage etc.

The Class C is easier to setup, you can stop anywhere anytime and make a cup of coffee, go to the bathroom, take a nap etc. I love the Class C lifestyle. Setup time is less than 10 minutes if we move slow.

  • You're right on the money.

If you compare a 5th wheel and pickup with a Class C, all vehicles perfect then there should be little difference in maintenance costs as long as both setups are maintained the same.

Keep in mind the problems with fifth wheels would be posted in the 5th wheel forum category and problems with a truck would be posted in a different forum category (tow vehicles or technical or general) You'd have to research both and then compare with the motorhome category posts for an apple to apple comparison.
