LOL, we put memory foam under the bunk ends. The mattresses in the pop up were "heated" and so nice at night... We loved those as long as you had the memory foam under them...if not, you felt the board.

The best mattress I remember was when I was young. As her parents and those before they made their own beds and ticks.I remember the rope bed and frame and the thick feather down tick. She got a iron bed frame later then a brass one. She hated the brass one because she had to polish it along with a full days chores of what was essentially a 1800s and prior homestead. I didn't weigh as much obviously then and just lying on that bed was heaven. Never did sink in it seems. Sleep came easly nestled on a cloud. Of course at that age I could have slept on a crosscut saw edge. She hated having to unsew the tick, however often, and washing all that down in the big iron pot, that had to cut wood to feed the fire for. She dried the down in bags made of(brain freeze) that coarse thin cloth used to strain stuff through like grapes for jelly on the clothes line after she had spread them on a sheet in the grass for almost all the moisture to evaporate. Never had any problem with bugs in the grass getting into it,far as I know.Could have been the the home made lye soap, perhaps.

That is not the way I see it. Those old spring mattresses were horrible and that is when they were new. After a short period of time they sagged.

Twenty years ago we bought a King sized foam mattress from Costco. It is still doing great with no signs it will ever need to be replaced. It is multilayered and the top gives it just enough softness and the inner layers give the support without sagging.

We also bought an 8" Queen sized foam mattress for the camper. After 2 years of full timing and many months of part time use it is also like new. I actually like it better than the way more expensive Costco brand. I believe it was $300 delivered from Overstock but that was over 10 years ago. It is a Serta or Sealy, I forgot which.

All mattresses suck these days. We paid nearly $3 thousand fora mattress and if I'm not careful I will roll/fall off and it is not great on the back. near the ege it slants now. a
We had a 6inch feather down topper on our old mattress n the coach. You have to fluff them up each day! Wife got tired of it and gave it away and bought a $2 hundred dollar mattress in Kingman,Az. Did not get much sleep at all on it.
Our old bedroom furniture is upstairs in a guest room. 30+ years old and you can flip it.It is still the most comfortable but only queen size. Our King has a ridge down the center. it apparently is two smaller mattress combined. it is a Sealy brand but that apparently doesn't mean anything. I hope I can find a king feather down topper for it.Maybe can get a good night's sleep. Are Chinese feathers soft?

The factory materess is usually a spring thing.. Designed to go on top of another spring thing (Spring box) but they don't put that in an RV

Most RV stores sell memory foam.. Frankly I do not like memory foam. I prefer the spring thing... I'm strange I admit it

Now I'm in an apartment. .Still sleeping on a Spring Thing on top of a plywood slab no box springs.. Eventually that will change but heck, I just got the new RV matress last winter. Dang near died putting the old one in the giant dumpster (I'm somewhat physically limited and that job exceed them. My Limits went up after a visit or 3 with one of my doctors), ONE of the reasons I no longer RV

Yes, you've learned the ugly truth about RV mattresses. They're horrible.

I was looking at ours the other day and trying to remember if we replaced it or just improved it.

Our first RV came with a futon and it was the worst. We got rid of that and installed an RV Sleep Number. It was OK (better), but still not great. And the firmness really changed a lot with the altitude. (Pro Tip - Let the air out if it if you're traveling from low altitude to high, or else it will balloon out like a back of Lays chips and maybe even explode.)

On our current RV (5 years old), we bought a 3" memory foam topper and it's fantastic. Like I said, I can't recall if we replaced the underlying mattress or not, but I don't think we did. With this topper though, our bed is as good as our bed at home and way better than any hotel/motel bed.

So I would start with a topper and then go from there.

I guess we were lucky. Our first RV was new and had a comfortable mattress. The current RV we bought used and have no idea if it is the original, but it is comfortable. If I were to change it I would get a Sleep Number bed. We still sleep on a water bed at home.

We just got a queen mattress to replace our Factory one. Until now, I was sore in my shoulders and back. The new mattress is thick and firm. The old one looks like an old gunny sack in a side by side comparison.
