Maxxis tire failure

I had a Maxxis M8008 205/75 R 15 tire fail on my utility trailer yesterday.

I had stopped for fuel and noticed what looked like a wet spot on the tire where the tread and side wall meet.

The tire was unzipping and I could see the steel belts.

I was lucky in that I caught the tire before it self destructed and was able to get to a tire shop for a couple replacement tires.

I think trailer tires are just like gambling. Sometimes you win other times you lose. I've had brand new tires blow for no apparent reason, other last forever well past there "shelf life". I just maintain and monitor them and hope they don't kill me one day.

LOL, kinda like buying an RV :)

Glad to know my Maxxis have a 5 yr warranty, but I did notice on their site that it's 5yrs from the manufacturers date on the tire, not from date of purchase. Mine were date coded late in 2011, and I bought them in early 2012. I still am very happy with my Maxxis though. Had 2 sets on my previous trailer with 5 rs on the first set with no problems.

I didn't realize it said that about 5 yrs from manufacture.
The salesman said something about that and I argued that it wasn't fair because they could have sat in a warehouse for many months before I bought them.
I guess I was close enough to the limit that they agreed to pay out of good will.
  • Your the 25th person who has reported issues (lots of separations) with the Maxxis ST8008 on this web.
Have no idea what size your tires are but some have said not all of the Maxxis ST8008 tires sizes have the nylon cap under the tread.
Some believe it makes a difference.

I would watch the others close as usually when one separates the others can be close down the road.

  • Mine were just over 5 1/2 y/o (they have a 5 yr warr) but I'd had them a few months shy of 5 years. Maxxis covered the one that hit the curb under warranty - they paid about 90% of the new price because it had that much tread left.
  • Interesting.. Do you know how old the tires were? Tread separation is scary no matter the brand.

    Glad you caught it.

    Thanks!

  • I just had to replace two of my Maxxis tires - both had a failure in that same area but I believe they were both my own fault.
The first had been repaired with a patch on the inside and slow water infiltration eventually got to it.
The other tire had it a tall concrete curb at a dump station that was hidden by weeds. That could have easily caused the eventual failure.

I take stock in the fact that I have never had a catastrophic failure of one of their tires.
