Maybe you can help with an insurance question?

I'm curious about something from the insurance standpoint. Lets say we have two coaches as shown below.

$399,000.00 2005 Newell 45' Coach excellent shape 50,000 miles
$379,000.00 2013 American 45' Coach excellent shape 6,500 miles

Both are close to the same price but one is 1 year old where the other is 9 years old. How does insurance work on motorhomes? I know how it works with an automobile but a motorhome is a different beast and would just like to have an idea when I start looking.

Would you expect insurance to be about the same?

Thanks
  • Thanks everyone I appreciate the feedback and although I don't have an agent I'm sure I can go through USAA who ties into Progressive Insurance. Thanks again
  • Value is the key component in the insurance cost. Definitely call your agent before buying.
    Don
  • I would expect them to be somewhat the same cost to insure as all motor homes I've insured for clients is based on the value when looking at the physical damage portion of the policy. On a brand new motor home you may be able to get replacement cost coverage on it where an older one will be Actual Cash Value (ACV). As noted, it's best to call your agent or company and make sure it's done correct.

It sometimes depends on what state the vehicle is registered in.
Not just the state, but the zip code can greatly affect the cost of insurance. The zip code identifies the area which might be prone to hail damage, or have a history of lots of accidents or thefts, etc.

  • I have called my insurance agent, MANY TIMES, from the showroom floor. No matter whether I buy a house, car or motorhome, I call my agent to find out what the ins. will be. :) :) I recommend you call rather than chance it. I started doing this when a co-worker bought a car and found out it was rated as a sportscar and she and her husband were under 25. NO insurance company would cover them.
  • I believe the insurance company will establish the value of the vehicle when any claim is made. If you have full replacement insurance, they will replace value vehicle for vehicle.
