Met some fellow campers who were really far from home!

While on a short getaway to Bass River State Park in NJ last week we began talking to a family we met while waiting to fill our water tanks. There was a mom/dad and two young boys. They apparently were all the way from Germany and had recently flown into New York City. They then rented an RV and were planning to travel down the east coast to Charleston, South Carolina. They were heading down along the Jersey shore and were going to take the Cape May ferry to Delaware and try to stay in as many state parks as possible. The father said they had flown over last year and did the Shenandoah mountains in VA, and the smokies in Tennessee. He said they think America is a truly beautiful country and his kids love to travel through it. On this trip they "doing the ocean sites" and were going to travel along the east coast. He said he prefers to dry camp (had a generator), and asked if we could recommend anywhere. We told him to be sure to check out Assateague State or National parks, on his way, as well as First Landing in VA. He already had Assateague on his list as must sees, and was anxious to check into the Virginia parks. I must say they were such nice people and it was very cool to see that they thought so highly of some of the sites of our country. I hope they have a wonderful experience!

  • When I was hosting at Illinois Beach SP, in the Summers, it was a common thing for people from all over the planet to fly into O'Hare, rent a MH from Cruise America and spend their first night in the US in the IBSP campground.

About a month later, I would see them again when they spent their last nights at IBSP prior to returning the MH and flying back home.

Typically their English skills were marginal at best when they first arrived here and they were usually quite fluent in English when they returned.

For some strange reason, a lot of them asked where they could tour the street where I had a paper route when I was a kid.

We're going to do the same thing in Europe in 2015. We're flying into Frankfurt, renting a MH, and traveling throughout Europe for 3 to 6 months. Wish we could do it sooner but got too many places to see here in the US first.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)

Crick - are you allowed more than 90 days ?
  • We always enjoy meeting travelers from overseas great folks wonderful to talk with them.

    Funny story:
Number of years ago we were camped at Lassen my son was with us.
A youth group from the Netherlands were tent camping in the next site.
Fine bunch of kids very quiet and courteous.

The group had no qualms about stripping down outside the abode for cleanup and changing :B
My 14 year old was beside himself to say the least!

Funny thing was the only persons who minded were the rangers...
We asked my son to go over and offer our TT's facilities to them.
They gladly accepted and were a bit overwhelmed by a small amount of hospitality.
    That was a great outing!
  • Met a couple last summer from Germany. They were on a one year journey around the US. Same camp ground a week later met a couple from New Zealand who had flown in to visit son in Vancouver BC and took a MH they had bought and were spending several weeks traveling western US. So this is not uncommon, especially during the summer.
  • sounds awesome. hey how is bass river btw? i checked out the site and i think i may go down for a short weekend. full hookup sites decent?

edit. actually it was timberline camping i was looking at....
