Instead of steel wool, use a copper scouring pad--It won't rust.
I'm in the middle of a battle with mice or chipmunks. Many traps now, but haven't caught anything yet. They may have voluntarily left. Lots of peppermint oil. They made a real mess that will take some cleaning up. Will start this weekend.
If you want to trap them live, Try tin cat. It can trap up to 30 at a time. Not sure how well it works yet. I got it on amazon for about $14. Highly rated.
