Michigan sales tax question

Hoping someone from Michigan will chime in on this one. I live down in Missouri and am considering purchasing a tt up in Michigan. I might add the only reason this dealer has got my attention is there $1800 cheaper on the exact same trailer compared to my local dealer. Anyway the dealer up there is adding 50% of my local tax from here in MO. saying the state of Michigan requires they collect 1/2 of it and then they forward it to the state of MO. To me i smell a rotten fish but i know each state is different. I thought i would get some thoughts from you guys especially anyone who is familiar with Michigan tax laws.

  • I suppose the real question is is the dealer charging Michigan tax AND 50% MO tax?
On the west coast, no sales tax in OR. If you buy in OR you have to pay the tax from where you live on large purchases. My concern would be if you paid MI tax and 50% MO tax, what would you be charged when you register the veh. in MO. Shouldn't have to pay double tax.
Also, in WA they ask for your zip and charge that tax. WA pays as much if not more than CA so it doesn't really matter.
I believe most states charge your home state tax, but am not sure.
