Micro wave oven.

Does any one know if they will even repair a Micro wave oven ? Every one I have talk too says it's cheaper to just get a new one.
Previous Motor Home I had to replace it and had a very hard time finding one that would fit and when I did it sure wasn't cheap.
The one in this Motor Home the turn table has quit working. I hit some very rough road in Oklahoma between Texas & Colorado. After getting to the camp ground in Colorado that's when it quit working.
I was just wondering if it could be very simple repair.
Thanks for your help.
  • When the original then 15 year old Sharp microwave in our motorhome died, I found a Hamilton Beach at Walmart that fit the Sharp vented trim perfectly for $88. The only mod needed was some small shims under the feet to get the positioning in the cabinet right.
  • My DH has repaired mine twice. Once was when the turntable motor quit working. He does know his way around electricity and wiring. He looked up on Youtube to see how to access it and ordered the part off line, then put it in. Did not have to remove the microwave. Another time the door latch broke, so no using it until that was fixed. Again, he ordered the part off line then looked up a youtube video on changing it.

I am glad he is so handy with all things in the motorhome. I do agree, if you are inexperienced in this, better not try it. But I would think an appliance repair person would give it a shot. Both times, the parts were quite cheap. The motor about $13 and the door latch $4. Still using the 14 year old micro/convection.

Years ago, we had a first generation microwave that quit working. It was a countertop model and we took it in to an appliance repair shop and they fixed it. That was much cheaper than buying new because back then, even the basic ones were several hundred dollars.

So if you are stationery and not on the road, you might check small appliance repair shops. You could even order your own part and see if someone would install it. Worth a shot.

  • Yes, it is possible sometimes to repair a microwave. Some problems can be repaired economically if you can and are willing to do the work yourself, and a non-turning turntable could be one of them.

It is unlikely to be economical to pay someone to repair the microwave, however.

You absolutely should NOT try to repair the microwave yourself unless you know and understand the very real electrical dangers involved. The power supply for the magnetron is easily capable of killing; it produces a few thousand volts at a substantial fraction of an ampere, a good recipe for electrocution if something goes wrong. As was mentioned, the capacitor in the circuit can hold a substantial charge even after the oven is powered off and unplugged.

There are some good sources of information on microwave oven repair on the web. This FAQ by Sam Goldwasser is one of the better ones.

Before diving in, double check to make sure that the turntable spinner doohicky is properly seated on its shaft and the little wheeled ring thingy is in the right position and everything is otherwise correctly lined up and installed.
  • Use the microwave and turn whatever is inside a 1/4 turn every 2-3 minutes or halfway through cooking if less than 5 minutes.
  • Microwaves are not consumer repairable. There are very powerful capacitors inside that if handled improperly can cause death. The turntable does not need to work to microwave anything. Just continue to use your microwave.
  • I have seen many of them use a rubber belt from a small motor to turn the plate. Take a look and see if it popped off or broke. MCM electronics used to sell various lengths of rubber belts. Just be sure to unplug it before you remove the cover and stay away from any capacitor......it can be holding a charge.
