The definition came from those who graduated and/or came of age at the change of the millennium (i.e. class of 2000 and beyond).

Deb and Ed M - Excellent post, The last line sums it up in a nut shell. You should be very proud of their accomplishments.

As mentioned, the definition of a Millenial depends on who you ask. But generally it's "Millennials: Born 1981-1996". We remember what life was like before cell phones and internet. Kids just graduating and coming into adulthood right now are not really millennials. That's the next group. As an early millennial myself (36 now), I have friends I went to high school with that now have kids who have graduated high school.

This is awesome!! Imparting real-world knowledge really helps kids - if for no other reason than to not get *taken* by the shysters.

Back to city vs country: doesn't matter, IMO. I grew up in the inner city, but still managed to learn to do carpentry/plumbing/electric, etc (and no - I didn't take "shop classes" because those were for boys) and I have shared my knowledge of those things with my kids. When they want a tile floor in the kitchen, I show up with the tools, and then teach THEM to lay the tile. My 38-yr old daughter got a 4-year degree in 3 years AND paid off her student loan the week after she graduated. She's on house number 2 - doing a complete makeover. She does yoga, and rock climbs. And camps. My point is that each generation has those who excel, and those who get by.

I'm 49. I spent most summers with my WWII generation (and served) grandparents. I'm not the "Marlboro Man", but enough of that generation was put in me that I feel like I am compared to most of the younger guys I meet. There is a distinct difference.

All that said, I suppose I am between those generations and now have an RV with many comforts. I hope the "tough" guys don't look down upon me. For what its worth, I do everything outside of major issues myself. :)

My point was to blame ANY generation is wrong. We decide as a society what we expect as far as services. I could give you plenty of examples of people who I knew who worked most their life and passed away before collecting medicare or social security. What benefit does name calling or making derogatory remarks serve?

Umm, most of us do get more than "one penny" back, even during our working years. Protection of person and property, education to mention the most obvious. Also, it's not over 'til it's over. My brother in law worked until 62 at a high salary job, paid his taxes without fiddling them, luckily never needed any safety net program until Social Security. At age 80, the cost of two+ years of chemo, etc. has far exceeded all the taxes he ever paid, plus what his kids have paid, probably his parents, too. Lots of us probably remember the news story a few years back. "Get the Guvmint off my back" rally in one of our more backward states. A large number of participants were cluelessly riding around on Medicare provided scooters. Being smug about stuff like this means someone hasn't thought it through.

Lack of respect in various ways. Generations are all different, each has pros and cons, each one has "good" and "bad" people in it.

I'll try not to contribute negatively here, but imho if you can't say anything positive/nice, is there really a need to post?

Sorry for the comment, hopefully this doesn't derail the thread - any more than it already has.

We camped the same way, started tenting, then popup, etc etc. My parents camped fairly frequently, probably so Dad could get away from the stress of the military. Not sure.

Since I don't know many millenials, I have a very limited experience with them. You really only see the negatives in the news.

My nephew just graduated from college and is a "millenial" at 22. He dual-majored in Geology and Education. He's interning in the middle of Minnesota, worked for a while in Wolf Ridge ELC I believe. He's very laid back but does seem to work and make money. Matter of fact, he worked at McDonald's so much that he was able to save quite a chunk of money for college and buy his own car.

Those are the "positives" about that millenial and that's just my opinion. We rarely see much "positive" in the media, on Facebook, here, everywhere. But those positives still exist and we need to remember them.
