  • The article states there are "42 motorhomes registered in Montana that this would apply to". That number is so far off. There are many, many more - thousands and thousands.
  • Just remember, that is the same Legislature that wants to tack another $1.50 per pack on cigarettes. The thinking is that such a tax will raise revenue and encourage people to quit smoking.
I will admit, it does help with quitting. The last time they did this it was "only" $1 per pack "To help pay for the Children's Health Insurance Program." When the tax went into effect, I finished the cigarettes I had on hand, and quit.
There are so few vehicles that have a retail value of $150,000 or more in Montana that making money for the state by taxing them is a pipe dream. It makes me wonder what those guys (and gals) in Helena have in their pipes! I think the "average" Montana wage earner finds the whole thing rather hilarious. Just another reason to: 1. Never buy such an ostentatious rig. and 2. Buy rigs 11 years old or older, then put PERMANENT license plates on them. Yeah, you will pay three years worth of taxes, but then you never have to renew the registration as long as you own it.
That bill will have little or no effect on the majority of Montanans, and probably not effect the LLC market all that much either.

Though there are many issues with the Montana LLC option and many have felt the "Sting" of an Treasury tax evasion investigation.

That law would not effect me if I decided to risk it.. Sticker price on this house was too low. Thus this is my only comment. To tax 150,000 RV's but not tax 150,000 plus houses.. Is Discrimination.

The lawyer in question runs the largest firm the does these LLCs. So of course he's against it, it would effect his personal bottom line.

Montana has been under pressure by a number of states to "fix" the LLC "problem". This looks like an answer, make it less lucrative for people from say Calf to license their rig in Montana but doesn't ban the practice.

I get that the lawyer has a vested interest in his position but it still doesn't change the possibility that this decision can effect the state's money and thus how much residents have to pay or just do w/ o certain services.

And yeah many many many states have been peeved at this kind of loop hole; can't/won't go on forever.

  • Interesting.
There are not that many people who live in Montana (think there is only one Congress seat) so if the responding lawyer's assessment is correct the legislative body will need to find a new way to add on to the state's income stream.
