Mosquitos!

I've seen a lot of people posting on facebook about those home-made mosquito traps. Has anybody tried them yet to know if they work or not?
With all the flooding in MI, the mosquitos are the worst I've ever seen at our seasonal. They swarm me instantly when I get out of the car. What else have you found that works?
Before anybody says it - "It's camping! There are supposed to be bugs!" There, I got that out of the way.:)
My son seems to be especially sensitive to them, poor kid swells up like none of the rest of the kids do.

  • Just downloaded an APP for my Blackberry that's supposed to repel mosquitoes via a high frequency emission by the device.
It has several frequencies and a timer built in.
Haven't tried it yet, the bugs should be out this weekend. We'll see:)

Well the APP worked well as long as it was used with a repellant:R

  • Therma cells and OFF! clip ons work for us. This year seems extra bad for skeeters here, too.
  • I've found those clip on battery operated repellent fans to actually work pretty well. Can't think of who makes them right now, but they're all over. In addition to the beer, of course!
  • I've heard that brewers yeast is good for keeping away mosquitos. So I guess that means drink lots of beer.

If you pay attention, folks that drink a lot of beer never seemed bothered by mosquitos...in fact they never seem bothered by anything.

Anyway the story goes if you ingest brewers yeast it causes a smell to permeate from your skin that keeps mosquitos from landing.
  • In certain areas of Florida, especially during the rainy season, we either wear Deet or sit outside in front of a box fan to keep the slow, low flying C-130s from hauling us off.

My youngest daughter is hypersensitive to mosquito bites. She never goes anywhere without her bottle of Benedryl®.
  • Yes, the first hatching of skeeters is extreme this year thanks to the very heavy monsoon type rains we've had in the state in April which created so much standing water which are the breeding grounds for mosquitos. Heavy rains and/or lots of standing gorund water is far from normal in our state.

Once this first hatching dies off and if staying normal with precipitation, the second hatching about Memorial Day will be much much smaller. Going to keep bug repellent close by until then. Our electronic bug zapper has been singing and sounding almost constantly for a week now but it is starting to slow down now.

Heck the last 4-5 years we'd hardly seen any skeeters in our area of Michigan or up north and the U.P. either. Never used any bug repellent once as it was not needed and we're outside most of the time all 7 days of the week as we're retired.

Guess you'll just have to be patient and hope for continued dry normal weather for a while or cover as much of you as you can and repellent treat the rest so the hungry blood suckers don't enjoy you as "dinner".
