I just don't see this being worth the bother for me.
Standing water in Texas brings mosquitoes, and stuff like West Nile, Zika, and other nasties. It also smells bad, even in winter.
In the north, it would freeze.
To boot, I've seen mice climb up some crazy surfaces before. If a mouse can jump out of a five gallon bucket (which is why the spinning can traps have water in the bottom), they can easily hop over the metal wall, and if they wind up dead in the moat, the aroma isn't that great either.
They can also drop down on the rig as well, like from a tree.
