I use these things all the time for various things, though so far, not on my face. They haven't damaged painted walls, plastic surfaces in the house/car, leather furniture (leather care after cleaning), shower walls etc. etc.. They are a VERY fine abrasive.
I don't think they would work very well on a rubber roof, although they might clean a small spot pretty well, the natural chalking from the roof would clog them almost instantly. You'd need a lot of time, a lot of patience and a trainload of these things to do a whole roof. On the other hand, I don't think it would harm the roof.
