Must Motor home lights be on to tow a Jeep Cherokee?

We just purchased a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, Latitude. We took it in to have a new set of base plates installed, and to have it wired for towing behind our Winnie. The latter is, of course, already wired, ...

I am curious, being as you like the Cherokee, rather than take the financial beating of trading it, why not jus tie the steering wheel ?? We used to do that years ago, and never saw any ill effects from it.
