It *might* help get your catalytic converter back to you if police find a stash of them, but by the time you get it back you'll have already replaced it. So you'll get back your used, probably damaged converter, that you have no use for, and if insurance paid for it, it's their converter now.
Beat me to it...not hard to cut out a VIN number you etched into it.
Even easier just smear a little mud on it and claim you didn't see it because they don't typically come with a VIN number.
