Need brake controller reccomendation

I am almost ready to take out my new to me 2001 Aerolite Cub F19 Hybrid. The primary TV will be a 2014 Acadia that I am installing the factory tow package on. On occasion I will also be towing it with an 04 Sierra that has factory tow package.

The camper came with a massive hitch adapter and sway bars that link to brackets on the trailer frame.

I need to get a brake controller to work the electric brakes on the trailer. From my brief reading I'm thinking a proportional controller is safer than a time delay type. Being in Jersey we're often in stop-n-go traffic and my understanding is the time delay type will gradually increase trailer braking the longer the TV pedal is depressed. They also wouldn't react quick enough in a hard stop allowing the extra weight to overpower the TV's brakes.

Ideal would be one that can be easily swapped from one vehicle to another. In SWMBO's Acadia I need mount it in an unobtrusive way. I'd like one small enough to fit in the little cubby just in front of the shifter.

On the Sierra mounting isn't an issue. I've had a homemade MDF center console buckled into the center seat for over 10 years. I'd just screw the controller bracket to the dash.

A quick check on Amazon indicates that I would need a different harness adapter for the two vehicles but that is not a big deal.

So which brake controller is small, reliable and easy to swap between two vehicles?
  • I went with the Prodigy P2 and install was a snap with the vehicle specific harness. The max setting of 6.0 using the lever seems to be OK. I could stop the camper and TV using just the lever on the P2 at low speed. Will probably need some later tweaking since the camper has sat for two years and the brakes were inoperative when I got it.

Since my TV is pretty light (GMC Acadia) should I leave the P2 on Boost 1 or up it to 2 or 3 in case of a panic stop?
  • Another Prodigy vote. Had one in my prior TV, now integrated from the OEM. You cann purchase plug and play harnesses for each vehicle such that you can just switch between the two vehicles.
  • I have used the Prodigy P2 controller for quite a few years and it works flawlessly for me. A big advantage for you would be that it can easily be removed and used in another vehicle since it just plugs into it's holder. All you would need purchase for the 2nd vehicle is another wiring harness (and possibly another holder). Only need to purchase one controller for two or more vehicles.

I mounted mine in the cubbyhole in my dash and all you would need to do is drill a hole in the rear of yours to the wires could enter the unit. To change vehicles, just unplug the unit from one and plug it into the other.

  • Prodigy P2 is what I use, works very well in traffic. I couldn't go the P3 plugin for some reason in my type truck it wouldn't work unless they re-ran the wires. I wanted a plug in so P2 was the choice.
  • The Sierra only has seats for 3. The Acadia seats 7 plus has floor space for the dog.

Believe it or not the Acadia is rated for 5,000 lbs. once the factory wiring and hitch are installed. Changes the shift points and tranny pressure. The Aerolite I believe is shy of 3,000 dry before I redid the floor. The beefed up floor I put in probably added less than 200 lbs.
  • P2 or P3. For the money these are best controllers you can buy. Mount it under the dash.

Any reason you wouldn't tow it with the Sierra all the time? The Acadia is capable for the right size trailer, but it's marginal for this one.
  • The specs on that page list this as the size:

    Dimensions: 3" L x 4.5" W x 10.5" H

    That must be wrong.
  • P2 or P3.

P3 has option for electric over hydraulic and fancier display.
