The UC San Diego med school did a study and found that hands-free cellphone use is almost as distracting as handheld usage. They also found that 60% of seniors use their phones while driving (I'm in the 40% category).
It's been quite a few years now since I was rear ended by a pickup truck going about 50mph while I was stopped at an intersection. He was using his cellphone and not watching the road ahead. I ended up having to quit working while for him the penalty was just his insurance premium going up a bit for a few years.
If you're caught using a phone while driving or it was found to be the cause of an accident you should be thrown in jail for life as far as I'm concerned. The problem where I live is that there are next to zero cops on the road and drivers use cellphones all the time. Our gov't talks tough about it but does little to enforce the law or penalize people.
I agree, we lost our daughter to one of you multitaskers. It is all good until it is not good. Get your heads out of your butts and stop fooling yourselves about how good of a driver you are. I have had this debate many times on forums and I realise I will not change anyone's mind on this subject, but please be aware of how devastating it is to lose a loved one due to someone else's stupidity and careless actions. YOU ARE NOT ALONE ON THE ROAD!!!
Plenty of studies have shown that humans do NOT multitask well at all. Our brains are not wired for it. Those who think they do are fooling themselves.
Perhaps society should revert back to walking. Slowly. With 500ft between people. Surely THAT would be safe enough?
People will still drive cars, still use electricity, still have campfires and walk in tick-infested woods.
Remember, LEOs are exempt from hands-free laws (at least the ones I know). Why? Can 'mere citizens' not match their mental prowess?
What about Doctors? Lawyers? Farmers? Off roaders (when is last time you had to navigate over a 6 ft boulder on your way to work? LOL)
How about those who have driven over 20 years? 40 years? 500k miles?
Surely no one believes the skill level of all people are equal, yet laws like this blame everyone for the faults of (statistically) few.
More FREEDOMS have been "given up" by 'Americans' who undervalue and underestimate encroachment upon them than were ever lost in wars.
Hint: Playing on emotions is a common weapon against logic and reason. Recognize it early and call it out to alert the sleeping.
Some won't understand, some won't care, some will mock. So what. It doesn't change the situation or the risks. Freedom is seized and defended, never "voted into existence"
Now EDUCATION about the dangers of distracted driving...100% support. ;)
