New Location For Licensing

I am SD currently. We traveled to SD around 4 years ago and spent the night and established our Domicile there. Obtained Drivers License and Mail Forwarding in Madison. The Company is now defunct. My DL expires later this fall.

I was under the assumption when we first did this we could renew by mail within 6 mo of our DL expiration, that info was FALSE. We have to spend the night within one year of our DL renewal. Bottom line I don't want to drive from CA to SD!!!

I mostly have the SD DL and License Plates so I can Double tow in CA and it seems to work in OR and WA (YES it's NOT legal there).

I would like to get my License Plates and DL in AZ since double tow is legal there and CA recognizes them also. AZ in not too far from where I winter in CA.

So now you have the background, SUGGESTIONS?

Is anyone ACTUALLY READING any of what I have posted?

I want to get my DL and plates in AZ. I DON’T want to drive 1,200 miles from SoCal to get my SD DL that is expiring in September.

AZ is only a couple hundred miles away.

Looking for recommendations. On how to get that accomplished.

    - google how to establish residency in AZ.
    - drive to Arizona
    - follow the rules on establishing residency
    - get plates and DL

Noooooo. I want to see 12V keep yelling into the internet!

You have to admit there were several responses that no way read all of what i posted.

I don't consider it YELLING just making my works stand out. :B
  • I spoke to a nice Lady at DakotaPost, she said no matter what since my address will have to be changed because My Dakota Address is out of business I have to make a stay at RV Park or Motel.
  • Are you going to do that? Seems to be the path of least resistance and will save you money in the long term. You don't have to take the fiver. Ride your Harley and enjoy the trip.

Seems to me like you've got a pretty good setup they way you've got it now. Just a little bump in the road due to the forwarder going OOB. From what I've read that has been a PITA for a lot of full-timers.

Regarding what the Dakotapost lady said, I wonder what happens if you put in a change of address in advance of needing a new DL? I know I have changed my address for my DL without proving residency here in CA. I guess the fact that I get the new DL in the mail is sufficient proof. Might be an issue if I were trying to renew and change address all at once.

It’s all about being able to tow the MC trailer behind the RV thru OR n WA I guess CA also.

Yup it’s a “bump” that came 5 years early. Oh well.

There is no reciprocity for length limitations OR double towing (or call it triple, if you prefer) - in states where same is prohibited.

Sooo SD plates (and/or a DL) will *NOT* negate that problem in the states you mention.

BTW / IMO - America's Mailbox is (and always has been) the best choice for SD "residence" and mail forwarding.

    Good luck with your dilemma.
