New RV Sales Tax

I know this is state specific but I'm a little confused on how to figure this out.

I live in NC. I am looking to buy a new RV at a Md. dealership. What sales tax should I figure to pay on this RV?

  • I've purchased 4 or 5 times from dealers in one state with the motorized vehicle to be registered in another state. Maybe I was lucky but in all cases there was reciprocity between the states. The dealership in the selling state collected the applicable tax and fees that were required in the titling state and paid those to the selling state. I rec'd temp tags and a copy of the paperwork giving to the selling state. When I applied for title and tags in my titling state, they took the selling state paperwork and gave me the title and tags. I presume there is a process between the states for the transfer of funds but it didn't involve me and I didn't care. I would guess most dealership finance/title folks will know very well how to do this in a way that minimizes the work and concerns of the buyer.

I purchased in SC & paid in NC.

Tell them it is an 'out of state' sale. No tax until you register in your home state.

    This is what I'm hoping.

I will be calling DMV tomorrow. That should be quick and productive. :S
  • Tell them it is an 'out of state' sale. No tax until you register in your home state.
  • It kind of depends on the relationship between the two states. I'm buying a new mh in NC but will register it in SC. I will pay SC sales tax of $300 but then be subject to personal property tax of a few thousand.
  • Call DMV. I think you pay the NC rate and tax when you register in NC, at least that is what I did on a Truck purchased in SC and a car purchased in NY. Would think they would give you a temp tag and you pay tax when you register in NC but not for sure.
  • Typically, if you take delivery in Maryland, you will pay any applicable Maryland sales tax. Your home state should credit you with any sales tax paid in another state. However, you would be very wise to ask your local DMV to get the accurate rules for your state, as well as asking the seller what taxes they collect in their state for our of state buyers.
