New Toad?

Thinking about upgrading our toad. The CRV is a little small for all the junk we have. After being happy for 12 years with Hondas maybe it is time to go to a Ford Explorer.

Does anyone tow a '13 or '14 Explorer.

Rv is a Dutchstar with a Cummings 400.

Thanks

Joe
  • Replacing your toad in an interesting process. The short answer is that we bought a 2014 Ford C Max Energi (traded in our Subaru Forester). It was a discussion on this forum several months ago that interested me. The C Max is able to be towed with all tires on the road. We had a Blue Ox Base Plate installed and tow with no difficulty. We use a Brake Buddy and the odometer does not turn over. The C Max is am amazing car... this week we are getting 73 mpg; as the car reaches its maximum potential, we expect to get even better gas mileage. This summer we towed it 2000 miles and all went well. We disconnected as we wanted to tour around. This is certainly a car to look at because Ford is still giving great incentives to lease.

I love the C Max. Give it a look!
  • 2015 Honda's are not towable anymore, so does not make a difference if you think they are small

I would look an the towable Jeeps
  • Towing a 2014 Ford Explorer after replacing our 08 Explorer this spring. Biggest pain seems to be that we never experienced any problem with dead battery with the 08. The 14 just has too much electronics drawing on the battery and even though the manual says stop every six hours and start the engine I have found that is way too long and the battery will be dead. Finally broke down and added a dedicated charge line from the coach to the toad. The 14 is easier to set up for towing as it no longer needs to have the neutral tow switch installed. Ours is a key model rather than a push button start so I just put the transmission in neutral and turn the key to the #1 position.

Watch which model you buy though as I believe the eco boost model is not towable.
  • You say you want to upgrade because of all the junk you have. I take it from this that you intend to put a lot of junk into the toad. Filling the toad with junk is not a good idea since it adds weight to the toad.

If this is your plan, remember that the max toad weight is its weight as loaded with the junk in it as towed.
