New Tow Car

Yes some automatics can be towed 4 down. Some do need to be run after 250 miles or so and usually for longer than 2 minutes.

Best thing to do is narrow your search down on which car you like and look in the cars manual under 'recreational towing' section. There the manufacturer will state whether it can be towed 4 down.

The car's manual is THE best place to get the correct information.

I currently tow a 2014 Ford Focus, w/auto transmission, 4 down.

We tow a 2010 Malibu automatic 4 down. It is the 6 speed automatic. It is fairly light compared to some and needs to run for 3-4 minutes before towing, and I have a switch in one fuse that keeps it form discharging while on accessory. It has 73,000 miles on it with another 25k towing with no problems. As above, there are several sites that will help find a towable car, but the owners manual in the car is the final say, unless they come out with an addendum like they did with the Cruze several months after its introduction. Motorhome magazine has a annual booklet of what vehicles are towable four down without adding a lube pump to the transmission. I get the book along with my subscription yearly.

I'm disappointed that the new Honda automatic transmissions in the 2015 cars make it not towable anymore. We are on our second CR-V and it makes a great toad.

You need to check a few sources and do some due diligence. Do NOT rely on the dealer to accurately tell you if a TOAD can be pulled 4 down. Too many horror stories of mis-information. Remember, their agenda is selling a car, not about your TOAD.

that might be adequate for screening purposes, but the best and only true source is the owner's manual.

I tow a 2011 Fusion Hybrid 4 down no problem.

If you are a member of FMCA you can download their annual dinghy guides for free, rather than pay $1.99 for Motorhome Magazine's version.

I've always managed to find them for free. I have them all and never paid anything. Just have to poke around
