New Truck Question

New to the boards, I currently have a 2013 Ram 1500 w/3.55, tow capacity is 8700lbs.

We are looking at upgrading travel trailers to a Kodiak 30' BH. Dry weight is 7300, loaded is 8900.

My Ram already struggles with our current trailer that weighs 8000 loaded.

I am considering upgrading trucks with the trailer upgrade. I know going with a 2500 is probably the way to go but in the interest of money I have been looking at the Silverado w/3.42. It's rated to tow 9200.

My question is will it struggle like my Ram does?

  • The silverado is not an upgrade from the Ram. They're both very similar in terms of engine power, transmission gears, suspension, etc.
A 2500 just doesn't cost that much more and would be the proper truck for the application. It may even cost you less if you don't have to upgrade tires, wheels, add airbags, etc. And it may hold resale value better.
Diesel is nice but is completely unnecessary for a trailer of that size, especially if you aren't pulling often. The RAM 6.4 or the Chevy 6.0 are both more than capable of pulling that weight.
