New Video: "Coffee - No Generator"

Nice! I'll have to give that a whirl. I'll admit I do fire up the generator just to use the Keurig, but I'm willing to try new things :)

My wife is an avid coffee drinker (I am not). A couple years ago the power went out at the campground we were at. We had only an electric drip coffee maker.

In order to satisfy her "addiction", I ended up using one of the coffee filters, put it over a funnel, poured coffee grinds on top of the filter in the funnel. Boiled water on the propane stove (does not take electricity you know), and then simply poured the hot water into the funnel, it dripped into a cup.

Well, after that bit of experimentation, we went out the same day and bought an old style percolator coffee pot that can be used on the stove top. It's been in the camper ever since, and .... never used! But its there as a back-up!

I enjoy the taste of percolator coffee. But I do pour it through a paper towel into a thermos when it's ready. No grounds in my cup and stays hot for hours.

I think your video was well-paced and did a good job.

But I am amazed that there are people out there who have no idea about the many ways to make coffee without using electricity and they need an instructional video to learn how.

I suppose the next step is for them to completely forget how to make coffee by themselves. And when the Starbucks or Caribou coffee shop is closed, they will be completely helpless. I suppose we may soon need a video for people who get into a car with roll-up window cranks and have no idea how to get the window to move. :)

Good job and using the obvious equipment on hand, I prefer to use a Malitta cone filter and filter holder. Same-o, same-o.

Back in my college days, the grad students in chemistry used a glass funnel and Whitman #1 filter paper to make coffee in beakers. They quit doing that after one of them mistook a beaker full of chromic acid for coffee and died.

But we have both a Melita cone filter and holder that amounts to the same thing. We also have a stainless steel stove-top percolator, and prefer that whenever more than 1 cup of coffee is needed.

Great video! Brief and to the point.

Same procedure, a Plan B power-free adaptation of existing Plan A system (no funnel required):

1. Set up the Mister Coffee with filter as usual and leave the top open.
2. Boil the usual quantity of water in a saucepan on the RV propane cooktop.
3. Pour boiling water over the grounds gradually until all water used.
4. Drink coffee after it finishes dripping into pot. Repeat as necessary.

Generators are great for recharging electronics in the 120 house outlets, running the A/C for a while, or cooking with the microwave. And yes, for coffee, unless you wake up way before "generator hours" in some locations, and then we've successfully used Plan B (see above.)

That's exactly my issue. I'm that "morning person" everyone loves to hate. If I'm not up and doing something before dawn I feel like I'm wasting the day.

And for the record, I know how to make coffee without electricity. I've just been too lazy to get the apparatus since acquiring my RV a few years ago. While the OP's method is impressive, his video inspired me to purchase a good old-fashioned stovetop, percolator coffee maker. Brown will bring it to my door by Thursday.

We always used a stovetop perculator for coffee when dry camping. It makes the very best coffee!!

... and for toast: butter the bread and plop them in a frypan and you'll have an awesome treat.
