Nighttime Trailer Setup...

For the first time in 3 years of owning our TT, we will be arriving at a back in camp site space after dark... It is easily done in daylight when you can see the parking pad but at night it will be different... The camp ground is unlighted... Since there are no back up lights on most trailers, how do you accomplish this evolution? I am thinking that I might take a portable halogen shop light and plug it into the power / water pedestal to illuminate the pad but not sure how that would work. Putting the DW with a flashlight in her hand behind the trailer to guide me would be comical at best... Ideas or suggestions??
  • insruct DW to hold the light high and aim it down on herself in the path you need the rig to go. . You keep her in your mirror or stop cold, then go see what you want to do. Between you ,it is a matter of what you can see, what she sees. Just take your time, give your guide due instruction on what you need.
  • My wife is great at assisting me in backing up. She has 4 commands (left, right, straight back, and stop) that I (we) understand. We also have an orange cone that I set up on ground where I want the driver's side rear corner to end up. Have her shine a light on the cone (or some object) and the rear corner of your RV. (Not in your eyes).

Don't back up if you can't see her. If I don't move, she will come to my window for a conversation.

This system does not always work. I also have a microphone at the rear of the MH where I can hear her voice… I don't always want to hear that.
  • I do it all the time. Mostly I just get out and look until I'm sure I'm not going to blatantly hit something. I find I can still see my wife from the light of the taillights.

If you have a truck you can hang a towel or something over the truck taillights so they don't reflect off the front of the trailer and back into your eyes.

Some people lay out some rope light on each side or at least one side of the spot. Then they can just skirt the lights with a tire.

If you bring a shop light, make sure it's not at the front of the site but rather further back into the site. It might even work to point it at the ground and just navigate by the light reflected off the ground.

If you decide to wire in some permanent backup lights, mount them on the sides pointed back at the tires. If you mount them on the rear bumper the trailer will block your view.

  • I have used a lamp connected to the power tower when needed, then park the best i can; then go to sleep. In the morning i get up early and park the right way.

Place 4 lanterns on the the ground, two of the right side of your RV site ,two on the left side of the trailer site. Place the lights on each side about 5 yards apart, just like they do at Airports. Turn on your security lights on the side of the RV. Give your wife a hand held walki talki and you use the other in the truck. Back the RV between the two lights on the ground:)
  • YEP.....
You need a lamp, spot light, flashlight...something to light up the area.

Turn on trailer porch/scare light to help illuminate area also
