No tension in awning spring

It worked fine yesterday..and now nada. I can pull it out/down fine but it doesn't retract. I can manually wind the roller and fabric back in but the spring isn't..springing. I can hear the ratchet sound as I roll it in. I am presuming it is broken? or is it a matter of re-winding? I am looking at U-Tube stuff and there is one talking re-winding.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    I'm only 5'6" 120# and i can do it

Get a couple of step ladders for supporting the tube
And a bud to help you and it's a cake walk

Do the rachet end with the lock first

    Then do the other end

I'm not much bigger and I've had the springs out of 2 different awnings when I replaced the fabric. Extend the awning and rest one end on a step ladder. You should strap or tie it to the top of ladder so it doesn't slide off. A 2nd step ladder for you to stand on and it's a one man job. Now if you're removing the whole roller tube to replace the fabric then it becomes a 2 man job or it at least will be easier with 2 men. Not really anything to do for a 2nd man if you're just replacing the torsion assembly one side at a time.

  • Thanks gents...I will take it into a shop first, to determine, yes busted..and then which one. After all I have read and heard...I don't think I need to test my muscle against that spring, either. But then again...I have a bud that just doesn't know when to say no. We'll see.

  • broken
i replaced (2) springs in my awning in 2015
they broke someplace in the length of spring, not on the end where you would think you could repair it
when i took the old one out, they were all rusted,
and there was some dirt and rust in the roller tube

pushed some rags thru to clean it out

after getting it all back together, and rolling it in and out a few times

i took a marker and marked spots on the bottom of the rolled up tube on each end

and then drilled a 1/4" hole at each spot

this way any water/rain/car wash , that gets in the tube, has a way out
  • I'm afraid it is broken- figuring out which one is busted is a pain sometimes.
