I can understand a driver not knowing if a local has any more understanding of how to back up than they do. After all, if they back you into the tree, they can simply go back to their site while you are left with the repairs.
Doesn't sound like the case here. Just the typical guy who won't ask for directions and too prideful to listen to anyone. About all you can do is offer and then fade away.
