I am a helper. I try to not be the "Johnny on the spot" guy when someone pulls in. I will keep an eye on what is happening and intervene if I see something dangerous or damage about to happen. I have never been asked or told to go away. If I see someone trying to get into a very tight spot and there is a tree or rock to the front of the truck that the spotter might not be able to see I will go stand next to it. Other than an upheld hand or verbal "stop" pertaining to the obstruction I am standing next to, I do not give any commands unless asked to. And most of time the asking comes by way of the driver looking for verification of clearance.
I have intervened when some ladies from Canada that had a very tough time backing their 5er into a wide open spot, were trying to unhitch without placing chock blocks.
I have intervened when I was waiting for a family to get their trailer unhitched so I could get into the site across from them. They already put down the rear stabilizer jacks, burnt out their electric tongue jack and were looking for a larger floor jack because they could not get the tongue high enough to get it off the ball with the small one they were using. Once they raised the rear stabilizers it worked a lot better.
And I can't even begin to explain the new camping family we helped out in western NY. Search my posts, it is a good read.
