My DW is not a very good spotter. She has poor depth perception, and doesn't really understand the mechanics of backing a trailer and where it should go in a campsite. This means she generally stays in the car (however we have no poofy dog for her to hold :)), and I Get Out And Look a fair amount. But that is ok, it takes a few minutes but that is ok. At most I will have her watch my blind side and yell stop if I am going to hit something.
I generally prefer to be left alone to get myself backed in, but my slow cautious GOAL often garners attention. I have had all kinds. One guy latched on to the passenger window sill as soon as I stopped the first time, and proceeded to tell me which way to turn the wheel. Then the other way, no no, the OTHER way. I politely told him I had done this plenty of times and I would be ok.
Conversely, a recent trip saw us arrive after dark, and after my first attempt a neighbor suggested to drive to the end and come back from the opposite direction because the sites were angled and the other direction was easier. He was right and I thanked him. Being very dark, he then proceeded to be another pair of eyes with DW to keep me from hitting the stuff. This is the kind of help I appreciate.
