I'm afraid that "I know what I'm doing" infests all walks of life and every interest held by mere mortals.
I've had the same things happen to me as a professional photographer when I've deigned to offer suggestions to amateurs. So basically, I don't offer beyond a mild "need help?"
Offer a generic helping hand, they either take it or they don't. If they don't, pull up a chair, pop a cold one, and enjoy the show.
