Not Utilizing RV Parks or Boondocking

I'm thinking you can count on one hand the RVers who do what you suggest. Just my $.03

The only time we ever did this was when our 2001 F350 V10 spit out a spark plug on New Years Day. By the time we got towed and repaired, it was well after dark; we were in an unfamiliar area; and we were cold. Pulled into a motel with truck and TC and had a hot shower and a hot meal in the restaurant.

The only folks I've known to do the motel thing on a regular basis were being paid to deliver new RV's to dealers. Many use sleeping bags though and sleep in the RV at truck stops, etc.

I RV just to get away from Motels etc.

It would definitely defeat the purpose of the RV.

Based on what I think you are asking which is if I have my RV with me; I do not count as I have always used a campground or boondocking.

But I also have absolutely no problem staying in a motel/hotel and that is how most of my travel is done.

WHY?

I don't understand the premise of this post. If you do not use an RV park and don't want to boondock, where do you "camp"? And, maybe more importantly, what do you do with your trailer?

We have done it (motel) once in the past 35 years. Several years ago we left Michigan for Florida in January and the temp was -11 degrees. Yes, I said MINUS Eleven degrees! Our destination for the first day of travel was a campground in Rantoul, Ill. When we arrived there, the temp was still -11 degrees! We decided to stay the night in a motel and hope our diesel truck would start the next morning. It started fine and we continued our journey without incident.

That is the only time we have ever not stayed the night in our rig while travelling. We usually stay at regular campgrounds but occasionally will stay in a Walmart or other parking lot with permission - not often though but only because of extenuating circumstances.

The same was true when we used to travel and camp in a tent via motorcycle. We went all over the East, South, and Midwest on it and only stayed in a motel two or three times over the course of about 10 years. That usually happened if we had been riding in rain all day and needed a nice warm shower and a heater to dry out things. Lots of fun though! :)

Used to follow the blog of a family of 3 in a converted VW van doing the Pan-American Highway. With 3 of them and no onboard bathroom, in Latin America, there were no campgrounds and they could often get a hotel room (with secure place to park in cities) for $10/n.

In the US/Canada with an RV that has working facilities, it just doesn't make a lot of sense outside unusual situations like a break down.
