Oil for V6 Sprinter Engine

Mercedes-Benz recommends for their diesel engines, Mobil-1 5W30 ESP, or their own packaged oil of that weight.
Gasoline engines use Mobil-1 5W40 or their own packaged oil of that weight.

That would be my first source of info for any vehicle,,,instead of strangers on the internet

Of course there is an Owners manual, but the vehicle is 8 years old and Mercedes has apparently changed the oil grades recommended -----at least that is what a distributor emailed me. I read somewhere that they changed the 229.51 to 229.52.

The owners manual will just tell you to use "Mercedes Benz approved oil" not very helpful. they then go on to give you a chart with different temps and various different grades of oil to use in those temps, some of which overlap each other.

The owners manual states EXACTLY what spec oil to use, in my case it has to meet MB spec 229.51. Mobil ESP Formula M (as well as some others) meets this spec. It's not that uncommon for the uninformed to put the wrong oil in Sprinters.

I went to my NAPA store yesterday and he had the German oil that came in my 2008 Sprinter. He also got a filter and wrench for me. (5W30)

From Dave the Sprinter Guy, "OK, so here is what comes from our chief Sprinter tech in regards to proper oil for Sprinter models 2010 and newer!.

The weight of the oil, 0W30, 5W30, 5W40, etc is not as critical as using the latest rated oil that creates less soot. The proper oil to use is one with a rating of 229.52, which supersedes oil with a rating of 229.51 or 229.31.

The most important thing is that it has the ESP on the bottle as this is formulated for our turbo diesel engines.

To answer the question about 0W30 compared to 5W30 or 10W30, the first number is typically lower if you live in very cold climates. But again there is not too much difference between 0W30 or 5W30 as long as it has the 229.52 low soot rating."

There are other brands besides Mobil that meet the MB spec that you can buy at Napa and other auto parts stores. The regular 5-30 Mobil isnt MB spec.

Not formula M that is required for MB warranty. If out of warranty, I suppose you can use whatever you wish.
