Old tow bars and brackets question?

What are you supposed to do with older tow bars and vehicle brackets that are no longer being used.

I have a roadmaster tow bar from my last CRV along with the mount brackets. Very heavy and lots of metal. Tried to sell for over two years but no luck.

Can you take these to a metal salvage yard for disposal and a few bucks? There must be a ton of these that people have after changing cars or tow bars.......

  • Scrap is only worth $30-$40 a ton right now. Scrapping those hitch parts would not even pay for the gas to drive to the scrapyard.

If they're not selling, your price is too high. Anything will sell if the price is low enough.
  • Towbars will sell when the price is right. I bought at 40% or MSRP for almost new, barely used. Work down from there.

Brackets are a hard sell, because by the time you quit towing, the market for exactly what you have gets real small. They are likely just ferrous scrap metal, value not enough to pay for gas to drive to a recycler.

Keep in mind that a $40,000 car eventually becomes less than $200 worth of scrap.
  • I paid $250 for a Roadmaster Stowmaster 6000 lb. capacity towbar a couple years ago. I found it on craigslist.
craigslist works, whether you want to sell or give away.
  • A scrap yard will take them but to me, the price they pay for iron is not worth my effort. In Kansas City, we have an abundant number of people that drive around on trash day and collect metal to take to the scrap yard. If I put something metal out on the curb on trash day, it's usually gone within a few hours.
