Older Florida Sunpass may not work after 12/31

Saw an article in our paper this morning that Congress requires all toll roads be able to accept transponders from any state as of October 2016. To make the transition, Florida has been gradually introducing the new models and notifying people if their old ones will no longer work, with info for replacing with the new version.

If you have a Sunpass and don't know if it will still work, Google: SunPass Tag Swap.

There's a PDF flyer to click with photos and descriptions of old and new versions. If it beeps and has batteries, it is an older model.

If this has been posted before, apologies. I know a lot of Florida visitors or snowbirds buy Sun Pass transponders. We got one years before moving here.
  • Technical point: The law requires that the toll collection systems in every State will accept (from a technical perspective) a transponder from any State. The older Sunpasses don't meet that requirement, which is why they are being phased out. This, however, doesn't mean that a given state has an agreement for data and billing exchange with another given state, so that must all be worked out - ergo the list of States that Florida is working on signing agreements with.
