I was in software development. I was not on call, but during a period of helping my wife care for her mom out of state, I was able to continue working remotely. It was a lot of large uploads/downloads and video conferences. I used a Verizon PC card at that time, but that is probably not the best way now. I still use a Verizon connected iPad today as I find campsite WiFi to be too slow and unreliable. I pulled an enclosed trailer that I made into an office behind my truck camper.
I had one Wilson antenna for the phone and one for the PCs.

I know the current development teams prefer the open environment, non-stop yakking, and constant interruptions, but I worked best sealed away with a lazy boy recliner and a swing over monitor with wireless keyboard and mouse in my lap.

I am retired now, the company thought it was best to move the mission to India and China. This had me singing an old Harry Chapin tune:
"Well another man might have been angry, and another man might have been hurt, but another man never would have worked for IBM... I stashed the severance check in my shirt." Chapin/fred42
