Not RV related but vacation related on call story. About 20 years ago I scheduled a scuba diving vacation to Little Cayman Beach Resort. I covered my bases by having someone cover for me in case of a problem. I found a handwritten note in my hotel door after returning from an afternoon dive to call in.
I went to the office to ask to use the telephone. There was only one telephone line to the resort that guests couldn't use. But there was a pay phone at the bar. I call collect and found out the server had crashed and shut down the entire accounting and reservation system for a multimillion dollar resort facility and my backup person couldn't be located.
So, this is June in the Caymans. The telephone booth is about 120 degrees. I'm on the line for close to two hours talking someone who knew nothing about server software through a reboot and patch. The wife is feeding me cold beer to keep my server temp below boiling. I finally got them up and running.
The next month the CFO asked me about a call charge for several hundred dollars. Back then the international day call rates were several dollars a minute. He wasn't happy. I looked him in the eye and said, "I could have saved you the charge by waiting a few days until I got back to the US!"
Later, I was diving at Truk Lagoon in the South Pacific and had to use a dial up connection to do some work. Took me most of an afternoon to do what I could do now in fifteen minutes.
Years later before retiring in 2010 I routinely telecommuted while on vacation. Had some issues finding connections in campgrounds. Now, my iPhone connects fast and reliably. You guys have got it easy today.
