When out and about camping we don't let our black tank get anywhere near full. This keeps any "need to dump" way less than an emergency.
Of course it helps if one can keep their black tank's gauge working correctly or, alternatively, is carrying a flashlight along so as to be able to look down the RV's open toilet drain and visually check.
