One way to stop catalogs

For the next couple of years we'll be gone more than we're home. For the last month one of my goals has been to cut down on all of the catalogs. I've been using Trusted ID Catalog Choice.

Stop Catalogs Clicky

You have to set up an account (at no cost) so that you don't have to load your mailing address every time and they can reply when you've been removed.

You do have to enter all of the different names the catalogs use during the set up. They are then on a drop down menu to choose from. You have to send in the request with the exact name the catalog is addressed to.

Then after choosing the right name, there are two boxes to enter the numbers in the blue, yellow, or pink boxes by your name on the catalog, then send it off.

Then it takes a while. All of the catalog companies print them 6 - 8 weeks in advance, send them to the Post Office, and they deliver them to get to your house when the sale is going into effect. You'll probably still get two or three of them after putting in the request.

As I said, the catalog part is free. They also have a service for $35 a year to get you remmoved from all of the charity mailing lists that are sold. I haven't tried that one yet.

If you file a forwarding with the USPS, won't they forward everything including the few pieces of mail you still want delivered such as perscriptions? Yes I know we can pick them up on the road but the insurance company gives us the best discounts if they're mailed to us.

Unless the rules have changed since I retired several years ago, the answer is no, they will NOT forward everything. First class mail will be forwarded free of charge. Packages will be forwarded "postage due" unless the sender pays first class postage on them. So called "junk" mail WILL NOT be forwarded but the sender may request your forwarding address and begin sending them to your new address. That is where the term "address correction requested" on some mail pieces comes from. Newspapers and most magazines will be forwarded "postage due" for a short time also. The best way to stop "unwanted" mail other than the above posts suggested is to deal with EACH mailer individually because the Post Office MUST deliver the mail as addressed unless a forwarding order is provided. Dealing with each mailer individually can be a frustrating experience to say the least.

We heat our house with a woodstove, so junk mail is free fuel to us! :B

As a mailman, junk mail helps pay for my camping!

I do not know about that, but, if you travel around much you don't want to be waiting on paper mail.

    lol

I have to watch my cholesterol, so junk mail catches the grease in the trash bag!

Junk mail saturated with grease - even MORE heating value!
  • As full-timers, we totally eliminated catalogs and any junk mail by contacting

We did this 16 years ago but I understand you can now do it online now.

Also, everytime you order something you need to tell them not to put you on any mailing list and that goes for magazine subscription, too.

Eliminating junk mail can be done. When we have our mail forwarded by our forwarding service we certainly don't want to pay for those catalogs - although we miss not being able to pour through them!

  • The other way is to file a forwarding address with the post office. They will not forward that stuff.

Catalogs and junk mail. The only things keeping the USPS in business.
