opinion please

Hi would like to ask more experienced rvers this ,
I am thinking about going to Colorado Springs this summer I will be pulling a 29ft tt weighing about 5800-6000lbs loaded.
Driving a 2003 chevy 1500hd with 6.0l 3.73 gears, will be driving I-70

Elevation is about 6,000 feet, should I be concerned with anything?
Have not done any pulling in that range, mainly lot lower range.

Thanks
  • My trailer dry weight is 4500 that what the sheet says, which I take it with a grain of salt, even if specs are true, that is allowing 1500 extra for gear, which don't think I have.
  • Hard to imagine a 29' TT only weighing 6,000# unless that is the "dry" weight. Most 29's load to something north of 7,500# and if that is the case here it will be challenge for truck and driver. Good luck.

  • HI, and first good luck . You will be climbing all the way, and with a 1500 . even you have a 6.0 and the 3.73 gears , I have 2500 and have come across that are several times with slightly less weight.

Count on more fuel usage and I hope you have an extra cooler for the tranny if it an automatic. Your 1500 may not have the cooling system for the climb. If it does start to get hot just pull over and take it easy.
I do not want to dissuade you from a great trip though. Keep your speed down and watch the temps.

The roads are not all that bad except the short tie in OK about 45 miles to Colo. Then it is a pretty good trip. If you can stop at the Sand Creek Historic Site if you are into that kind of stuff.

Stay safe and have a great trip.

  • I don't see any issues. Its all flat to Colorado Springs. even with hills you would be fine!
