One has to remember its not necessarily the tire manufacture date that makes it old but the tires time in the sun and weather. A year old tire that has spent its first year of life setting in a warehouse or tire store has not been exposed to UV, heat and weather isn't necessarily a year old.
True......however when (if) you go to sell that trailer or MH with
the "old" tires, there's no way to document your claim that the old tires were really new.
"Well - I have the receipt right here".
OK - "but ahhh....why would you pay good money for old tires?"..:R
Most of us won't accept tires with old dates.
Tire dealers won't either.......well....
My story:
Had a small TT - had 15" Marathons that looked great, but they were about 8-9 years old.
Figured it was time to replace them. Went to my local "mom and pop"
tire store (been around a long time).
The owner/manager didn't have my size in stock, but happy to order them.
We chatted about the age of my tires and I said something about being over *SIX* years old and they were due!
He says, "Oh no - you should replace at *FIVE* years old".
Didn't matter - ordered the tires.
Couple of days later, he calls, says my tires are in.
Took two wheels and tires down, dropped them off - said I'll be back in an hour. His employees get busy mounting the tires.
On a whim - when I returned to pick up my two "new" mounted GY Marathons, I looked at the date code/s.
Seventeen (17) months old!..:(
Keeping in mind -the 5 year life span according to *him*- about one-fifth of their life was gone to - - "shelf-life".
Told the owner, no way Jose - either find some with more recent mfg dates, or re-mount the old tires and I'll go elsewhere.
He gets on the phone to his GY distributor, and after several pauses (supposedly the dist is calling GY) - the dist says GY only does a mfg run of my size ST tires once a year.
They don't have anything with a more current date.
BTW - I didn't ask for any special pricing on the "old/new" tires, nor was any offered.
So - "we" looked elsewhere. He came up with Coopers that arrived with a very current mfg date (about 5 weeks old) at the same price.
Moral of the story = Buyer Beware.
And...your choice (& your $$) for/of what's new and what's old..:W
Recent history....
I have replaced the factory supplied 16" ST Marathons on my 5th wheel with Michelin (LT) XPS Ribs which had to be ordered via America's Tire.
No problem - current mfg dates.
