- pnicholsExplorer IISpeaking of RV water fittings, what are those white and black fittings for RV water pumps where one side screws onto the pump's inlets/outlets and the other side is push-on for the plastic hose coming from the freshwater tank?
One of those on the flexible plastic fresh water line feeding our RV's water pump broke and I haven't been able to find that plastic adapter/coupler anywhere. - gboppExplorerI've been using SharkBite Fittings in my S&B for years, including the heating system.
Never had a problem or leak. They may cost a little more but, I think they are worth the few extra dollars. - stickdogExplorerI've used the sharkbite fittings a couple of times they seem to work, no leaks yet.
- I have used them all and will take Sharkbite (home depot) or Gatorbite (Lowes) any day if available.
- hooliganExplorerMy plumbing originally had black plastic fittings in the PEX tubing, they eventually became brittle, cracked and all the fittings had to be replaced. I used brass fittings, (elbows, "T's" etc) and the SS "cinch" clamps. Much easier to use than the copper clamp rings, and have been very durable..
This site shows a newer plastic fitting and it may hold up better than those on my MH.
PEX fittings
The black plastic did not tolerate chlorine.... The sharkbite or gatorbite fittings are excellent for quick repairs but bulky and expensive for extensive use. - westendExplorerYou've got your terminologies mixed. PEX = cross linked polyethylene and is a name for a type of that pipe. All types of fittings can be attached to PEX pipe using crimp rings or some of the newer self sealing push-fit fittings like Sharkbite, Blue Hawk, etc.
I prefer to use metal fittings, when possible. They deform less and don't break as easily as plastic. - RvpapaExplorerSince "Flair-it" fittings are nylon they won't work on copper anyhow. But they do work very well on PEX. and/or any other plastic type tube or hose.

I do not have any hard copper in the system, so flair fittings are out~
Flair-It fittings are a brand of plumbing fittings that work on PEX and copper. They are plastic...push on fittings.
Sharkbite (Home Depot), Gatorbites (Lowes) are brass push on fittings that work on PEX and copper....more expensive - PenManExplorerI have used both plastic and brass. The brass Sharkbite fittings hold great. I use a plastic Sharkbite fitting in the drain on my hot water heater with a piece of pex out of it so I can avoid the splashing. The pex does not leak when installed in the plastic fitting but it easily pulls out without use of the disassembly tool that is required on the brass fittings. If you are wanting a permanent connection (which can be taken apart with the special tool) I would definitely use the brass fittings even though they are fairly expensive.
