The most popular ones - the On The Go and WaterPur/FlowPur Mark 8000, are two examples - are 8000 grains per gallon units. The higher the gpg rating the longer between regenerations.

In CO where we are right now the water hardness is 20 gpg which is high and I have to regenerate my Mark 8000 every 30 days.
In AZ where we spend the winters the hardness is at least 50 gpg (that's as high as my test strips read) and I have to regenerate every 10 days.
If you use more or less water than we do, your time will vary. We use an average of 13 1/2 gallons per day.
