I think the biggest problem comes from those published MFG. Tow Ratings ie: Tow Rating 16,000#
Yet the 'fine print' is never seen, read or understood
Maximum trailer weights in pounds for properly equipped vehicles with no cargo
May vary depending on model, trim and/or powertrain.
Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight assumes a towing vehicle with any mandatory options, no cargo, tongue load of 10-15 (conventional trailer) or king pin weight of 15-25% (fifth-wheel trailer), and driver only (150 pounds).
Weight of additional options, passengers, cargo and hitch must be deducted from this weight.
All that is read is Tow Rating of 16,000#, yet the 'actual' payload available, the RAWR and Rear Tire Load Capacities will ALL be at limit or over ratings before that magical MFG. Tow Rating is reached.
So yes---- SUVs, Mini Vans, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton SRW, 1 ton DRW all can tow.......but each has their limits.
Best to understand and know those limits then to just hook up and go.
At least knowing the actual limits one can make an informed decision
